Kernewek Lowender - MAY 2011
Welcome to the biggest and best Cornish Festival in the world, Kernewek Lowender. Since its inauguration in 1973, the Kernewek Lowender has grown into one of the largest and most significant cultural festivals in South Australia. The eight day celebration attracts crowds in excess of 80,000 people to the Copper Coast towns of Kadina, Moonta and Wallaroo. Rich copper deposits and new mining jobs brought thousands of migrants from their native Cornwall to the Copper Coast area in the 1860s. Today, the legacy of the Cornish miners and their families lives on. Traditional Cornish language, dress, song and foods combine to make Kernewek Lowender an experience like none other. From the traditional Cornish Pasty and foods of the past to the freshest of today's local seafood, the festival is a gourmets dream. Finally, the Kernewek Lowender would not be complete without one of the most unique parts of the festival, 'Swanky'. Brewed specially for the festival, 'Swanky' is a traditional Cornish Beer, and each 2009 Swanky bottle will be a collector's item in years to come.
